VESA Special Interest Group Focuses on Emerging VR and AR Markets

AR/VR market presents rapid growth and fragmentation, which requires industry standards to improve system availability and optimize user experience

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) recently announced the establishment of a Special Interest Group (SIG) to address the standardization issues facing the rapidly growing AR and VR markets. As we all know, VESA has developed the widely used DisplayPortTM and Embedded DisplayPort (eDP) standards. It has also developed the long-term Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) standard that can be used together with interconnect standards such as VGA, HDMI, DisplayPort, etc. The monitor function used - as well as the DisplayID extension standard for 4K and higher resolution displays. With this series of display standards, VESA can investigate issues related to AR/VR compatibility.

VR is immersive, enabling users to get rid of the surrounding environment, while AR provides a virtual overlay based on the user's view of real-world scenarios. Head-mounted displays (HMDs) and AR/VR glasses have been introduced in the market for playing games and watching movies. Technical applications in automobiles, education, health care, and manufacturing are also coming soon. However, many developers are only concerned with enhancing the user experience and improving product interoperability. The lack of industry standards leads to incompatibility between products of different vendors, which increases the complexity and cost of product development, use, and update. In addition, lack of compatibility causes confusion for end-user use and hinders people from accepting AR/VR products more widely.

This AR/VR special interest group was formed on the proposal of VESA member Analogix Semiconductor, Inc., and it is open to VESA members and open to non-members to meet the different needs of all parties in the ecosystem. These include manufacturers of head-mounted display devices, eyewear manufacturers, and other providers that typically do not participate in the development of VESA standards. This special interest group will collaborate with other VESA task forces and related standards organizations to promote the creation of a strong ecosystem that allows end users to enjoy the best benefits.

Greg Stewart, Director of System Architecture at Analogix Semiconductor in Silicon Valley, said: “AR/VR products involve both software development and hardware development. This requires companies from different fields to work together to develop a common The AR/VR standard. The existing VESA team does not cover all professional skills areas. In our opinion, the establishment of AR/VR special interest group is very necessary to promote the development of the market. This special interest group will explore related technical fields, Provide recommendations on the requirements and scope of industry standards and establish goals and plans for subsequent task teams to promote more formal standards development and implementation."

The main tasks of the VESA AR/VR special interest group include:

Establish a hierarchy of AR/VR services, including physical connections, data transfer protocols, software drivers, and application layers

Define the basic communication data structure and communication channel between the source device and the sink device

・ Study related technologies and algorithms, standardize them, and achieve cost-effective implementation

・ Suggest changes to existing VESA standards to better support AR/VR

・ Collaborate with other standards organizations to incorporate proposed changes into related standards

According to Bill Lempesis, Executive Director of VESA, “It is a great pleasure to see AR/VR market grow. This can be seen from the US Consumer Electronics Show and other events. This year's US Consumer Electronics Show attracted more than 260 AR/VR exhibitors. The scale is far more than ever before, but one of the key questions that needs to be addressed is precisely when and how these products will be compatible. As far as we know, no other standards organization is currently working on AR/VR product features. With regard to interoperability issues, we look forward to using our industry leadership to encourage all parties in the industry to actively engage in dialogue and ultimately promote the application of this technology."
